La COP21 vient de s’achever et les défenseurs du nucléaire ont tenté de présenter leur technologie comme une solution au changement climatique, mais nous nous sommes mobilisés contre cette fausse solution par de nombreuses actions à Paris et dans le reste de la France.
EDF (Electricité de France) is on the list of official sponsors for the 21st UN Climate Conference (COP21), and claims that 98% of its electricity is produced “CO2-free’’. Since every operation linked to the nuclear industry emits greenhouse gas, this statement is misleading !
I ask EDF to stop lying and to withdraw all suggestions from its advertisements and publications that nuclear power doesn’t emit CO2, and thus falsely implying that it is a “clean’’ energy.
France prepares to host the COP21, a major international conference supposedly charged with solving the climate crisis. The French government and EDF are aiming to turn this event into a promotion of nuclear power in the context of global warming. Because the nuclear industry is in decline, it would especially benefit from taking public funding for new reactors as a solution to climate change. After the Réseau “Sortir du nucléaire’’ lodged a complaint in July, the Jury of Advertising Ethics reckoned that EDF’s statements on the nuclear power emissions “100% CO2-free’’ actually mislead consumers. Altogether, this is indeed an outright lie, that no scientific study supports.
In fact, all of the following interventions related to the operation of the nuclear industry emit greenhouse gas : mining, uranium enrichment, plants building and dismantling, confection of nuclear fuel, transportation and “treatment’’ of the radioactive waste... As an official sponsor of the COP21, EDF continues to distort facts, such as its claim that 98 % of its electricity is produced "without CO2 emissions." We denounce this propaganda, and will file a new complaint to the Jury of Advertising Ethics. Besides, EDF lost all credibility in terms of fighting climate change by not fulfilling its commitments : greenhouse gas emissions are not stopped by borders and sixteen coal plants of EDF, located all around the world, make it the 19th highest CO2-emitting company worldwide !
To introduce it as a “CO2-free’’ energy is a way to ignore the serious problems caused by nuclear power : increasing risks of major accidents and nuclear spreading, accrual of uncontrollable nuclear waste, and rising of the reactors costs.
To fight the belief that nuclear energy is good for the climate, we must pressure EDF to stop lying ! We demand that EDF withdraw all suggestions from its advertisements and publications that nuclear power doesn’t emit CO2, falsely implying that it is a “clean’’ energy.
